1NT Forcing ----------- The Response of 1NT to a major suit opening is used to show a hand that is not good enough to bid a 2 over 1. Opener must make a rebid. Opener makes a natural rebid, but lacking a four card second suit, opener rebids a three card minor (prefering 2C if opener has both) or rebidding 2H if exactly 4522 without reversing strength. Responder makes a natural rebid: taking preference to the suits opener mentioned, or bidding their own suit--- this shows a 6+ (but could be 5 if the heart suit) card suit. A jump by responder shows a hand that is almost good enough to bid a 2 over 1 (about 9 to 11 points). Examples: 1H 1NT (1) (1) forcing one round 2H (2) 3H (3) (2) 6 hearts, minimum hand 4H (3) at least 2 card support, 10-11 1S 1NT 2H (1) 3H (2) (1) 4 hearts, denies 6 spades, minimum 4H (2) 4+ support, inviting 1S 1NT 2D (1) 2S (2) (1) 3+ diam, denies 6 spades and 4 hearts, minimum (2) simple preference to spades 1S 1NT 2D (1) 2H (2) (1) 3+ diam, denies 6 spades and 4 hearts, minimum (2) 5+ hearts, minimum 1S 1NT 2C (1) 2D (2) (1) 3+ clubs... (2) 6+ diamonds, minimum 1S 1NT 2C (1) 3D (2) (1) 3+ clubs... (2) 6+ diamonds, almost enough for a 2/1 1S 1NT 2C (1) 2NT (2) (1) 3+ clubs... (2) balanced 9-11, denies 5+ hearts, 3+ spades ********************************************************************** NOTE: Over 1H, some people reverse the meanings of 1S and 1NT. Then, 1S is forcing one round--- opener can now rebid 1NT with a no trump type of hand and 2 of a minor would guarantee a four card suit. 1NT would show 4+ spades and 6+ hcp.
